We all love jumping in the car and going on holiday somewhere around NZ. Mangawhai is one of New Zealand's most beloved beach towns with its proximity to multiple surf beaches and an estuary. However, enjoying a Summer holiday here (and in nearby Pakiri) might not be reality soon.
The McCallum Brothers' company is proposing to the government to mine thousands of tonnes of sand off the coast of both Pakiri and Mangwhai. Using five different dredgers, all 365 days of the year, the damage they could cause is estimated to leave 16km worth of dust fumes, and destroy everything in its path.
Some parts of the affected area are snorkelling hotspots. If these dredgers swallow our marine biodiversity, these hot spots will become underwater wastelands.
