Sustainability at Australian Fashion Week

May 21, 2023

Sustainability is prevalent everywhere, whether it be in schools, work environment or even fashion! Upon watching the latest runway show at Australian fashion week, models can be seen wearing remodelled remnant fabric to create unique patterns employing the innovative fabric technique known as comperessions. This approach allowed more than 1000kgs of fabric to be upcycled. Further research revealed the alarming statistic that about 260,000 tonnes of clothing reached landfill each year in Australia. I learned that in order for brands to showcase their design in this fashion week they must meet 18 sustainability requirements including that there should be no single use plastic or packaging, 50% of the collections needs to be made from smart materials and a zero waste design is required. Through these efforts, the fashion industry is taking significant strides towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.  Witnessing such progress at the Australian fashion week instilled a sense of reassurance, reinforcing the notion that the sustainability efforts undertaken as Kristin School and around the world are contributing to a meaningful and shared commitment to forge a sustainable future.
